Chrome proxy setup
Chrome has no proxy settings of its own: it uses your computer’s. This guide covers the system route, a separate Chrome window with its own proxy, and when an anti-detect browser is the better tool.
- Windows and macOS
- HTTP with a login
- IP whitelisting for flags
Proxies for browsing
Lowest rate for each. Every tier is on the pricing page.
Before you start
Three things to have ready.
Your proxy line
Copy the host, port, username and password from the generator in your dashboard. The examples use Eternal Residential: et.vantixproxy.com, port 1000.
HTTP, not SOCKS5, for logins
Chrome cannot send a username and password to a SOCKS5 proxy. Use HTTP with a login, or SOCKS5 with your IP whitelisted in the dashboard.
A way to check
Our What is my IP tool and WebRTC leak test show whether Chrome really goes through the proxy.
Method 1: Use the system proxy
Chrome follows the proxy set in Windows or macOS, so every Chrome window and many other apps use it. The first time Chrome connects, it asks for the username and password in a pop-up.
- Pop-up login Chrome asks once per session
- Whole computer Other apps use it too
- Targeting Add _country-US to the password
- Turn off Switch the setting off to stop
Windows 10 and 11
Chrome > Settings > System
> Open your computer's proxy settings
> Manual proxy setup > Use a proxy server: On
Address: et.vantixproxy.com Port: 1000
> Save
macOS
System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi (or Ethernet)
> Details > Proxies
Web proxy (HTTP) and Secure web proxy (HTTPS): On
Server: et.vantixproxy.com Port: 1000
Proxy server requires password: On, then your login
> OK
Method 2: One Chrome window with its own proxy
Start Chrome with –proxy-server and a separate profile folder, and only that window uses the proxy. Chrome cannot take a password in the command, so whitelist your IP in the dashboard first.
Windows (Command Prompt)
"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --proxy-server="http://et.vantixproxy.com:1000" --user-data-dir="%TEMP%\chrome-proxy"
macOS (Terminal)
open -na "Google Chrome" --args --proxy-server="http://et.vantixproxy.com:1000" --user-data-dir=/tmp/chrome-proxy
Method 3: Many profiles, many proxies
For several accounts, each on its own IP, use an anti-detect browser. Each profile is a separate Chrome-based browser with its own proxy, cookies and fingerprint. See the AdsPower and Dolphin Anty guides.
AdsPower, in short
New profile > Proxy > Custom > HTTP
Host, port, username and password > Check proxy
Troubleshooting and questions
Why does Chrome keep asking for the proxy password?
Chrome keeps the login for the current session only, so the pop-up comes back after a restart. To stop it, whitelist your IP in the dashboard and leave the login out.
Can Chrome use a SOCKS5 proxy?
Yes, but only without a login: Chrome cannot send a username and password to a SOCKS5 proxy. Use SOCKS5 with a whitelisted IP, or HTTP with a login.
Can websites still see my real IP?
Through WebRTC they sometimes can. Run our WebRTC leak test with the proxy on. If it shows your own IP, use an anti-detect browser, which replaces the WebRTC address with the proxy’s.
Do proxy extensions for Chrome work?
Some do. Pick one that supports proxy logins and is still updated, because Chrome switched off many older extensions in 2024 and 2025.
How do I turn the proxy off?
Switch the system proxy setting off, or close the Chrome window you started with –proxy-server.
Which proxy is best for Chrome?
Eternal Residential for everyday browsing that never expires. Budget Residential for heavy use. Static Residential when a site should always see the same IP.
